Magdalia feat. Mayzie Chew 'Hold It Up' Single Launch with Kaiyah Mercedes and Lamont

Magdalia returns in 2024 with a brand new single and debut headline show featuring Melbourne new-comer, Mayzie Chew. Celebrate the release of ‘Hold It Up’ with performances from Magdalia & Mayzie Chew, and support from Kaiyah Mercedes & Lamont.

A soulful songstress with “one hell of a belt register” (Necessary Outlet), Magdalia’s recent single ‘Fault Lines’ topped the Australian Atomic Charts and was hailed as “evocative and memorable” (Necessary Outlet). Her release ‘Noreen’ was also voted one of the Real Songwriters of Melbourne Top 5 Songs of the Year proving her affinity for storytelling and understanding makes her a force to be reckoned with in her field.

“When it storms down,” everyone needs a shoulder to lean on and someone to hold them up. In conjunction with Malikah McEwen, the new single was written, produced and recorded by Seetali Mack (Kaiyah Mercedes, Kevin Silvester).

‘Hold It Up’ is a collaboration between Magdalia and long-time student Mayzie Chew, a young, emerging songwriter with a unique voice influenced by Tate McRae and Kasey Chambers. At only 16, she is certainly one of Melbourne’s most promising young artists.

SEB SZABO "LEANING ON YOU" TOUR

Born in California, the Melbourne-raised songwriter’s yearning voice evokes Coldplay’s Chris Martin, blending cinematic indie rock reminiscent of Gang of Youths with thoughtful lyricism to paint colourful canvases of life and love. His first EP, the autobiographical voyage "Staring Out The Windows", was released in July 2021, with sun-soaked stories of young romance. After a string of sold-out headline shows and an appearance on "The Voice Australia”, his tender duet with ARIA nominee Gretta Ray "Twice Over" was added to Triple J Unearthed rotation. His defiant and punchy new single “Leaning On You (Wrecking Ball)” manifests a new, bolder creative vision, forged in Szabo’s own battles with mental health. Produced by Dave Jenkins (Vera Blue, Ben Lee), the song embraces the arena rock that soundtracked his youth.

Through anxious times, the chemistry between Seb Szabo and his band has expanded even further - diving into the darkest recesses of the psyche, translating our deepest, most powerful emotions live onstage into something awe-inspiring.

Xani // An Inaccurate History of Electronic Dance Music

My dear home town, I return to you for a moment to remount a new and improved version of “An Inaccurate History of Electronic Dance Music”. Longer, faster, bolder, louder. Not to be missed.

Imagine a future without dance. Without dance music. Now forget about it and come with me.

It’s rare to find an artist so astute in their craft and in step with a genre they can reimagine it convincingly. Xani achieves this in her latest release with electronic dance music. So inaccurately, yet so eloquently it may have actually happened just like that.

When pandemic restrictions limited our movements and human connection, artist, songwriter, and violin player Xani explored what it might be like to never dance again. Bleak, isn’t it? Dance has the power to transcend limitations, to take a person beyond the moment through the power of a beat, a rhythm, a movement of ideas. The thought of losing dance inspired Xani to create a world within her own reach where dance lived on and metamorphosised into something bigger than the present.

A huge fan of dance music and the iconic philosophical spirit of the dance floor, Xani dove deeper into the nuances of the culture, exploring the roots of electronic dance music (EDM). Where it’s taken her personally and how it’s driven cultures and subcultures throughout its short history.

On a quest to depict the in-actual history of her beloved dance music in her very own way, Xani engaged a visual artists’ approach to exhibiting a concept. Her platform for exhibiting? Sound. Her vehicle? Whatever and whomever got her back to that place. Connected on gritty dance floors again, transcending the moment. Under lasers, through smoke, in the subtle command of the music.

An Inaccurate History of Electronic Music is Xani’s version of that place. A story transcribed through violin, vocals, loops, frantic, primal energy and raw and organic collabs.

With this new concept album and live show, Xani has created her own fictitious universe of dance. A place she escaped to over the solitary months of lockdowns, when dancing with, or performing to humans wasn’t an option. At the heart of it, An Inaccurate History of Electronic Music is an acutely personal interpretation of electronic dance music’s evolution through the ages. And the soul of it is good music to dance to. A party album where chapter, by chapter the (inaccurate) history of dance music is tracked by Xani – a veritable musical alchemist and total fangirl – and friends.

As well as playing violin, singing, producing, and writing, Xani dipped into her family of local musicians and dance music allies to explore, create, and dance around a fictitious and totally immersive world within the concept. This highly genre-lised, ‘not-a-concept-album’ performance is a sequential collection of dance music genres of the past through to the imagined genres and sub-genres of the future with Xani at the helm.

With An Inaccurate History of Electronic Music Xani has created a new world to indulge in a luxury we never before realised was so invaluable.

“…a fictional world of EDM genres according to me. Where violin is at the centre of it all! Is that even allowed?”

Doors 9pm

Part Set until 11pm

Kitty Rae Single Launch

Are you brave enough to swim with sharks?

Australian electro-pop artist Kitty Rae is swimming with sharks and ready to take over the world. Don't miss this one-night-only performance at The Gaso, supported by two extremely talented singer/songwriters, Sidney and Araminta, in a powerful, all-female/non-binary line up.

Kitty Rae is a pink-haired, dark electropop artist with an empowering attitude and unwavering ambition. Reminiscent of Halsey and Lana Del Rey, her infectious alt-pop music will lyrically hit deep, but have you grooving to the beat and humming the melodies for days.

Her confident, fierce attitude is undeniable, but her story is laced with a deep, dark quality that flows through her music. Her experience with depression and anxiety since an early age left her feeling disconnected - something she overcomes through music.

Soaring to over 13K TikTok followers in a short few weeks, her vulnerability and authenticity as an artist is captivating a growing worldwide audience who connect with her message of unapologetically being yourself.

With a live show that will suck you in from start to finish with lights, laughs, high-energy and deep feelings, Kitty Rae is proving to be a rising star in the Australian music industry.

Araminta is an angelic artist who revolves around sass-driven lyrics and smooth rnb grooves. Naarm based singer-songwriter brings her home produced art together through modernised feminine folk and pop influences such as Julia Jacklin, Faye Webster and Raveena. Her soundscapes are filled with soulful vocals, tight grooves, witty lyrical flares and playful uses of rhymes (while being soaked in a whole lot of attitude)!

You wouldn’t want to miss the beginning of this sassy heartbreaker.

Delivering bittersweet melodies threaded through vulnerable lyricism and comforting vocals, Melbourne artist Sidney, has forged a unique brand of introspective indie-pop that wraps itself around you - soft and familiar like your favourite linen.

Sidney marked her debut in 2020 with ‘Bullet’, a single that found itself on the airwaves of Triple J. She followed the success with ‘Guarantee’ and ‘Never’, landing a spot on Spotify’s ‘Soft Glow’ playlist, joining rotation on triple j Unearthed Radio and being labelled by Declan Byrne as “misty eyed, intimate and pristine pop that you feel a connection to when you're listening to it”.

Recent releases Tried and NICE GUY have amassed over 82K streams, landed on multiple Spotify editorial playlists including New Music Fridays, and Fresh Finds Pop as well as being played on Fbi Radio.

Sidney has just returned from a national tour supporting Harrison Storm and released her debut EP ‘Imposter’.

Don’t miss out! Get your tickets today before they’re gone.

Tomalia Debut Show

Prepare to be enthralled by Melbournian pianist turned singer-songwriter Tomalia. The homegrown, alternative pop artist plays around with her humorous but dark sound as she immerses her audience in pop cabaret style stories. Using attitude and eerie comedy, Tomalia sings about being a young modern woman and explores the ugly side of love.

Tomalia has been a pianist and singer for as long as she could remember and uses her classical piano background combined with jazz harmony and snarky lyrics. Studying a Bachelor of Popular Music at Monash University, Tomalia finds inspiration from fierce female pianists and singers including Fiona Apple, Tori Amos, and Florence and the Machine. Using the piano as an extension of herself, Tomalia tells eerie stories through twisted pop power ballads. Her alternative sound along with her sassy and unsettling performance style aims to draw you in.

The five tracks that make up “Light the Candle, Hold the Mirror” collectively tell a story of how places can shape our lives and who we are. Matilda Pearl With Keeks and Outfit

Breaking out in 2021 with releases ‘Linger’ and ‘What Can I Do?’, today Matilda Pearl has just shared new single ‘NICE TO KNOW YA’, out now via Sweat It Out. As the second instalment of her trilogy titled ‘MAYBE I’M JUST PETTY’, Matilda continues to say sayonara to toxic energy and reclaim her power the best way she knows how, making irresistible records. Basking in her pop-fuelled world of technicolour, she rids herself of bad vibes and second-rate relationships as combinations of acoustic and synthesised chords underpin layers of her electric vocal harmonies. Magically moving through her alto register, Matilda displays a richness in tone and depth of texture to be reckoned with. Entirely confident and self-assured she throws the ultimate level of shade, “hunny I’m so over it, gotta tell you don’t feel bad for me, I get to leave, you gotta live with you forever”. Forever bold and wise beyond her years, Matilda Pearl is non-stop flexing her insane energy and dynamic songwriting talents.

Mornington Peninsula based Matilda Pearl is going from strength to strength as she shares her technicolour world with every infectious release. Self-proclaimed as “mermaid meets disco”, she first discovered her love for songwriting at the age of 14, drawing inspiration from the likes of Lily Allen, Dua Lipa, Madonna, Jamiroquai and Confidence Man. Going on to enter triple j’s Unearthed High competition with ‘Your Touch’, Matilda garnered attention from an array of the station’s presenters as well as former Unearthed High winner George Alice. Recent releases ‘What Can I Do?’ and ‘Linger’ solidified her unique and inspiring pop sound, catching industry attention from the likes of The Music Network, Life Without Andy, Milky, Pilerats, AAA Backstage and triple j, with Declan Byrne noting how a Matilda record “feels like someone has shot a confetti cannon from a building top and everyone's suddenly dancing in the streets to the colourful rain!” Over the last 12 months Matilda Pearl has brought this insane energy centre stage with a plethora of festival performances including Reconnect All Ages, Land of Plenty, Groove Tunes, Ocean Sounds and NYE On The Hill, not to mention supporting Client Liaison at The Forum in Melbourne. This year she will be gracing the stage for her headline show at Northcote Social Club in November as well as returning to NYE On The Hill for what is guaranteed to be yet another electric performance.

MATTHEW GILBERT AND THE DWELLERS

Melbourne born and bred and flaming red-headed, Matthew Gilbert is an alternative singer songwriter with a folky and ambient flavour unlike no other. At the core of Matthew's sonic palette lies heartfelt songwriting, compelling storytelling and an abundance of relatable life perspectives. Matthew takes his musical inspiration from the likes of Sufjan Stevans, Boy & Bear, Coldplay and Bon Iver. His music is deeply rooted in storytelling elements from his own life and the people around him. These personal stories give an opportunity to think about life, illuminating the emotions we all feel but just can't fully explain. Matthew's arrangements captivate listeners with their honest melodies, lush harmonies and mysterious lyrics which reflect on every day to's and fro's of life. They hit hard, but always come for a cuddle afterwards.

After the successful album launch of his 10 track album ‘Getting Over All Of It’ in 2022, Matthew went off to perform it alongside an incredible 14-piece ensemble, to a sold out show and The Wesley Anne, creating a truly cinematic experience for his fans. Think lush string sections, earthy warm brass and an enigmatically soulful choir. This has spurred Matthew on to take this music into deeper areas of Melbourne.

Supporting acts include St Emerald and Rogerson.
